About this event
This is the first retrospective exhibition in Japan planned to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the birth and 40th anniversary of the death of Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985), a master of Nordic modern design. In addition to approximately 300 products and objects carefully selected from the EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, the Tapio Wirkkala Rut Bryk Foundation, and Collection Kakkonen, drawings (reproductions) and photographs revealing the production process and background will be exhibited. Wirkkala was active across a wide range of fields including glass, porcelain, silverware, lighting, furniture, graphics, and spatial design; the exhibition explores the appeal of the sophisticated forms he created by confronting materials and sharpening his tactile and visual senses. In particular, masterworks such as "Ultima Thule" inspired by the silence and vast nature of Lapland, glass objects with mythological motifs, objects using laminated plywood "Rhythmic Plywood," and land art will be introduced, showcasing not only his side as a product designer but also his delicate and dynamic expressive side as a sculptor and artist.
