About this event

A Bon festival event in the Mazaki district, this seasonal tradition marks the end of summer in Nakamura, the Little Kyoto of Tosa. The brush and trees halfway up Jodaichiyama (Mount Daimonji), which enshrines the mountain deity, are dug into the shape of the character "Dai" (large), where torches collected from households across the district are arranged and lit. It is said to have begun about 500 years ago when Fusaiye, the son of Norifusa Ichijo who fled to Nakamura during the Onin War, lit the fires to comfort the spirits of Norifusa and grandfather Kaneyoshi while longing for Kyoto. Known as the "fire associated with Lord Ichijo," it delights the eyes of many spectators. Shinto rituals are also held on the day, and fantastic flames illuminate the night sky.
