The Sakawa Town Tachi Dance is a traditional performing art said to have originated when members of the Heike clan fled Yashima, entered Mount Yokokura in Ochi Town, and danced to comfort Emperor Antoku. Designated as an intangible folk cultural property protected by Kochi Prefecture, the dancers wear black hakama with long white sashes hanging down their backs, white headbands, and arm guards as they dance facing each other in two lines. The sight of paper shide cut by long swords dancing in the air like a blizzard is truly magnificent. Pairs of two dancers in swordsman attire with white headbands, live steel blades, and paper shide tassels face each other, forming several pairs that perform. The moment the shide touches the bare blade, the fluttering white paper scraps evoke the image of a blizzard.
