About this event

The Kokuzo-san Festival, a festival day of Hiyoshi Shrine, is held twice a year on January 13 and September 13. This festival is based on the belief that by borrowing 'lucky seed money' (koun tanezeni) that attracts money and returning double the amount on the next festival day, one will not suffer from money shortages throughout the year. It is said that using the seed money as starting capital will make businesses ever more prosperous, and keeping it in a wallet will ensure plenty of pocket money, drawing many worshipers. On the festival day, stone Buddha statues are enshrined, including Kokuzo Bosatsu, who possesses inexhaustible wisdom and treasure, as well as Kanzeon Bosatsu, Fudo Myoo, Kobo Daishi, and Amida Nyorai. The group of stone Buddhas, which once moved from place to place due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism, was restored in 1986 when a hall was built on the grounds of Hiyoshi Shrine, returning to the syncretic form of Shinto and Buddhism where gods and Buddhas are enshrined together. This festival serves not merely as an event, but as a valuable opportunity to pass on locally rooted faith and history to the present.
