About this event
On Sunday, October 18, 2026, the 'Special Examination Success Prayer Grand Festival' will be conducted at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. This grand festival is held every year to pray for examinees' exam success, commemorating the day Sugawara no Michizane, revered as the god of learning, was appointed as Monjo Hakase (Doctor of Letters). The festival period runs from Thursday, October 1 to Saturday, October 31, during which special exam success prayers can be received. During the festival period, a 'Hiryu Tenjin Nebuta' lantern float is installed at the Romon gate, showcasing an arrangement embodying wishes to overcome difficult challenges inspired by the legend of the Dragon Gate (Toryumon). Ritual ceremonies are performed on Sunday, October 18 at 10:00 and 14:00, and the general public can also attend. Those who receive the special exam success prayer during the festival period will be presented with special ofuda talismans, amulets, and ema wooden plaques. Applications from distant locations are also accepted by mail, making it a valuable opportunity for examinees and their families to offer prayers to the deity of learning.
