About this event
Kinro Shrine's Toya is a summer festival held every August 31 at Kinro Shrine. This festival is held to pray for protection from typhoons and for a bountiful harvest. It begins on the eve of the 210th day counted from Risshun (the first day of spring) as the 'First Toya,' followed by the 'Second Toya' on the 220th day, and the 'Third Toya' on the 230th day, repeating a total of 3 times. People from 16 to 17 districts gather at Kinro Shrine in turn, and traditional furyu (performing arts using flutes and drums) passed down in each district are performed. Because furyu was historically dedicated all night long, it came to be called 'Toya' (all-night vigil). The starting time of the festival varies depending on the district, with the first district arriving after 17:00 in typical years.
