About this event

The Hiji Wakamiya Hachiman Shrine Reitaisai is a traditional festival held every October at Hiji Wakamiya Hachiman Shrine, a historic shrine with over a thousand years of history in Hiji Town. At this annual grand festival, gallant events such as the spear-twirling performance (keyari hineri enbu) and the sea-crossing procession of the mikoshi portable shrine are performed, captivating local residents and visitors alike. Celebrated at a historic shrine revered by successive lords of the Hiji Domain, the festival is a precious opportunity to directly experience local culture and tradition. Having a history of reconstruction where the once-destroyed shrine buildings were rebuilt followed by a grand annual festival, this event carries special significance for the community. The tower gate and shrine grounds still retain torii gates and stone lanterns dedicated by the Hiji domain lords, conveying the weight of history. Usually held on October 14 and 15, unique events not seen elsewhere, such as the sea-crossing procession of the mikoshi, are among the highlights.
