About this event

The historic 63rd Masamune-ko Festival, held in Iwadeyama—a place closely associated with Lord Date Masamune—is an event where you can enjoy a valiant warrior parade and an eve-of-festival celebration. The main event, the Date Warrior Procession, recreates the warrior appearance of Lord Date Masamune when he departed Iwadeyama leading a large force of 3,000 people to march to Kyoto in the first year of the Bunroku era, approximately 430 years ago. Blowing conch shells, the valiant appearance of the cavalry warrior troop and armored warrior troop gorgeously outfitted is truly like a moving Sengoku picture scroll. During the main festival, Festival Alley and the Date Warrior Procession will be held. The eve-of-festival celebration will take place in the parking lot of Iwadeyama Cultural Center (Schole House), and the main festival will be held on the Osaki City Iwadeyama Minamimachi Shopping Street. This festival aims to remember the youth of Lord Date Masamune, the ruler of Oshu, who spent 12 years at Iwadeyama Castle before moving to Sendai Aoba Castle, honor the virtues of feudal lord Date Masamune, celebrate his achievements, and pass this history down to future generations.
