About this event
The "Sagae Festival (44th Mikoshi Festival)" is a historic and traditional event held in conjunction with the Annual Grand Festival of Sagae Hachimangū Shrine. This year, the event will take place from September 14 to September 20. In particular, the "44th Mikoshi Festival," boasting one of the largest scales in the Tohoku region, will be held on September 20. It is an extremely rare mikoshi festival in Japan where three distinct types of mikoshi—"Honsha Mikoshi," "Dokkoi Mikoshi," and "Edomae Mikoshi"—co-star together. Under the theme "Ayato: Carrying Tradition, Moving Toward the Future," stylish carriers bring energetic excitement to the town of Sagae. In addition, the "Sagae Hachimangū Yabusame" (horseback archery), designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Yamagata Prefecture, will also be held, allowing visitors to witness the gallant tradition inherited from Kamakura samurai. Various other traditional events, such as an evening of Kagura performances, sacred palanquin processions (Goshinkō Gyōretsu), and Yakko town parades, will also grace the festival.
