Autumn Beetle Larva Digging Experience
Japanese name:秋の幼虫掘り出し体験
📅 Sat, Oct 10, 2026 - Mon, Oct 12, 2026
About this event
Held in Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture, the Autumn Beetle Larva Digging Experience is a valuable nature experience where participants can dig up rhinoceros beetle and stag beetle larvae themselves. The event will be held over 3 days: Saturday, October 10, Sunday, October 11, and Monday, October 12, 2026. The meeting place is Tokinowa (approx. 700m from Sky Palace Tokiwa). Capacity is 20 people per day, and the participation fee is 3,000 yen for adults and 2,000 yen for children (ages 3 to high school students). Campers staying at the campground the day before or on the day receive a 1,000 yen discount off the total amount. The experience begins with a lecture on tips for finding larvae and a rearing workshop to deepen knowledge, after which participants actually dig out larvae from soil and decaying logs. Each person can take home up to 1 male and female pair of unearthed larvae, and will also craft a rearing set. A bento lunch is provided. After the experience, visitors can tour the insect museum and enjoy a bath and relaxation at Sky Palace Tokiwa. The event proceeds rain or shine, but in case of severe weather, a decision on whether to hold the event will be made the previous evening. Participants need to bring gloves, a windbreaker, rain gear, and boots. This program is ideal for creating autumn memories for both children and adults while enjoying nature and learning about insect ecology.
