Blue Light-Up of Tomioka Silk Mill
Japanese name:富岡製糸場のブルーライトアップ
📅 Sat, Sep 19, 2026 - Wed, Sep 23, 2026
About this event
Every year, September 23 is the "International Day of Sign Languages," and was also designated as "Sign Language Day" in 2025 (Reiwa 7). In alignment with this day, the World Federation of the Deaf aims to spread awareness that sign language is an official language by lighting up famous landmarks and facilities around the world in blue. In support of this initiative, Tomioka City will also illuminate the Tomioka Silk Mill in blue light as part of the "Shine Blue Light on Sign Language! Citizens, Region, and Society as One Challenge Project 2026." Tomioka City enacted the "Tomioka City Sign Language Ordinance" in 2018 (Heisei 30) and strives to promote recognition of sign language as a language and ensure opportunities to learn it; this event aims to let many people know that sign language is a language. The light-up will take place at the Tomioka Silk Mill East Cocoon Warehouse from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Since it is after closing hours, admission to the grounds is not permitted.
