2026 Noragakujuku Opera Highlights Vol. 9: Shadows of Class and Light of Love

"2026 Noragakujuku Opera Highlights Vol. 9: Shadows of Class and Light of Love" is an opera performance held at Ora Town Central Public Center "Ora no Mori Hall" in Gunma Prefecture. This year's theme is "Differences in Social Status," depicting the shadows of class and the light of love through opera arias and excerpted scenes. Young singers selected by audition and experienced singers will rehearse together through a training camp in Ora Town and perform side by side on stage. Every participant aims to express their individuality and deep, complex inner emotions as stage performers, guiding the audience into the world of opera. The performance will be held over two days on Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30, with Nils Muus conducting and Akiko Nakajima directing. The cast includes sopranos Zixin Lin, Mayu Sugaya, and Chiara Ceccarelli, mezzo-sopranos Manami Goto and Hannah Rehrl, tenor Keiichiro Nagao, baritone Ryoichi Kojisho, and bass-baritone Ibuki Toriyama. In addition, Megumi Masui and Yuji Kosuge will serve as narrators. Exploring the theme of society and the body reflected in music, this performance provides an opportunity to learn the origins of musical expression through "love" born from differences in status and position, along with various accompanying emotions.
