Japanese name:諏訪神社の獅子舞

About this event
The Suwa Shrine Lion Dance, handed down in Koma-shuku, Hidaka City, Saitama Prefecture, is dedicated at the annual festival to pray for bumper crops and family safety. In recent years, it has been held on the Saturday and Sunday closest to August 28. The grand and rough dance is called the "Fighting Lion of Koma-shuku," and its bravery overwhelms spectators. It was designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Hidaka City in 1982 (Showa 57) and is carefully passed down by the "Suwa Shrine Lion Dance Preservation Society." Following the "Miyamairi" (shrine visit), the lion dance proceeds around the village on the east side of Koma-shuku, returns to the shrine to dedicate the "Mejishigakushi" (hiding the female lion), then circles the west side of the post town, and finally dedicates the "Saogakari" (pole dance). This traditional lion dance richly reflects the history and culture of the region and has been protected and passed down for many years by local residents.
