23rd Chikamazawa Kuruma Ningyo Performance
Japanese name:第23回竹間沢車人形公演
📅 Sun, Dec 6, 2026
About this event
A performance of "Chikamazawa Kuruma Ningyo," a precious traditional performing art handed down in Miyoshi Town, Saitama Prefecture. Inherited for over 100 years, this puppet theater is a rare art form across Japan where a performer straddles a wheeled cart called a rokuro-kuruma and manipulates a large puppet alone; today, it survives in only three regions, including Miyoshi Town. This performance presents a double feature: the well-known folk tale "Kaguya-hime" and the classic masterpiece "Tsubosaka Reigenki," depicting deep spousal love. Performed by the Chikamazawa Kuruma Ningyo Preservation Society and Wakadayu Wakamatsu III of Sekkyobushi, audiences can fully appreciate the world of Chikamazawa Kuruma Ningyo passed down across generations. Preschool children are not admitted, but a parent-child room and hearing assistance systems are available.
