About this event

Enshrined on Cape Sunosaki at the western tip of Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture, the annual festival of Sunosaki Shrine is a traditional event marking the close of summer. In 2026, it will be held from Thursday, August 20 to Saturday, August 22, and on the middle day, Friday, August 21, the precious traditional performing art "Minoko Dance," designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Chiba Prefecture, will be dedicated. This dedicated dance has been passed down since ancient times at Sunosaki Shrine, and on the day, a portable shrine procession will take place in addition to the Minoko Dance. To conclude the festival, the "Ohamade Ritual" is held to pray for safety at sea and a bountiful catch. Sunosaki Shrine is situated on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and has gathered the faith of fishermen since ancient times. Experiencing the traditional dance, portable shrine, and ritual praying for maritime safety at a shrine overlooking the ocean at summer's end offers an opportunity to deeply savor the summer atmosphere of Tateyama.
