About this event
Minato Science Museum will hold its summer special exhibition "Shapes of Marine Creatures" from Wednesday, July 15, 2026, to Sunday, September 13, 2026. Using the familiar sea of Minato Ward as a gateway, this exhibition showcases the diverse forms of marine life living in various environments—and how these shapes relate to their lifestyles and habitats—through specimens, models, video footage, and hands-on exhibits. The ocean is home to many creatures whose shapes make you wonder "why are they shaped like this?", and their distinctive appearances conceal adaptations supporting their survival. On display are rare marine creatures seldom seen in daily life, such as a life-sized model of the giant oceanic manta ray (the world's largest ray species reaching over 5 meters in length), an enlarged model of the deep-sea barreleye fish with eyes inside its transparent head, and color-preserved flapjack octopus specimens retaining original colors and textures. The exhibition consists of three chapters: "Prologue: Diverse Shapes of Marine Creatures," "Main Exhibition: What Is This Shape For? - The Figures of Marine Creatures," and "Epilogue: Wanting to Know More, Wanting to Share." Visitors can marvel at the diversity of shapes while reflecting on their meaning and connection to the environment. Numerous related events are also scheduled during the exhibition period.
