About this event
In Sweden, textiles that beautifully decorate interior spaces have long brought warmth and joy to people's lives. With modernization, printed textiles featuring colorful designs of motifs rooted in nature and daily life developed into an international industry. This exhibition introduces Swedish textiles—which have previously had few opportunities to be spotlighted—primarily designed from the mid-20th century onwards, through approximately 200 works and materials. They are characterized by motifs closely connected to nature and lifestyle, bright coloring, and approachable patterns that feel charming within their modernity. Just looking at these Swedish textile designs brings excitement, brightening rooms regardless of the season and giving joy to the daily lives of people in Sweden. In Sweden, where people spend long winters, there is a deep-rooted perspective that design is an essential means to spend daily life comfortably. Beginning with traditional handicrafts passed down in various regions, the textile industry centered on weaving developed, and eventually, technological innovations in the mid-20th century led to the blooming of printed textile design, attracting international attention. This exhibition unravels their little-known appeal from three perspectives: motifs, designers, and relationship to living. Centered on the vintage textile collection owned by private collector Sara Axtelius residing in Sweden, approximately 200 precious works and related materials are gathered with the cooperation of museums and archives in Sweden. Please enjoy the stories woven by fabrics that radiate an appeal that is both nostalgic and fresh.
