About this event

"Hokutopia Theater Festival 2026" is a citizen-participation theater festival held at Hokutopia in Kita Ward, Tokyo. Under the catchphrase "Watch, Perform, Create," it is a handmade theater festival planned and managed by an executive committee composed of volunteers, celebrating its 27th edition this year. During the festival, 32 groups, including drama clubs from high schools within the ward and amateur theater troupes based in Kita Ward, will participate to present thoughtfully crafted stages across various genres, such as contemporary plays and popular theater. Admission fees range from approximately 500 yen to 1,000 yen (with many free performances), and performance times are around 1 to 2 hours, offering a format that allows anyone to easily enjoy theater. In addition, lectures and workshops for enjoying theater will be held; courses covering essential theatrical elements, such as stage lighting lectures and stage art workshops, are well-received every year. This year's theme is "Expanding Theater Festival," reflecting the growing scope of festival activities, such as former high school drama club participants forming their own theater troupes to enter. Alongside performances by groups from public open calls, planned performances by the executive committee are scheduled, where citizens gathered through public auditions present works created in workshops under professional guidance.
