About this event

Oji Dengaku is a traditional performing art said to have started in 1322 and is designated as a Kita Ward Intangible Folk Cultural Property (Folk Performing Art). Young dancers wearing colorful flower hats hold small drums and sasara (wooden clappers), dancing to flutes and drums while changing formations, preserving the atmosphere of medieval Japan to the present day. It is usually dedicated in conjunction with the Oji Shrine Annual Grand Festival held on the Sunday immediately preceding August 10. In 2026, the Oji Shrine Annual Grand Festival's eve (yoimiya) is scheduled for Friday, August 7, the grand festival ceremony for Saturday, August 8, and neighborhood association events for Sunday, August 9. This year's dengaku dance will be held in autumn, scheduled to be dedicated from 4:00 PM on Sunday, September 27. In the event of rain, it will take place inside the shrine hall. This traditional event is held on the grounds of Oji Shrine, conveniently accessible within a 5-minute walk from the North Exit of JR Oji Station.
