Machida Tenmangu Annual Grand Festival

Machida Tenmangu, cherished as one of the Machida Three Tenjin Shrines enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, will hold its Autumn Annual Grand Festival "Shinkousai." During the Grand Festival, Kagura (sacred Shinto dance) and Taiko drum dedications will be performed, and numerous stalls will line the shrine grounds, creating a lively atmosphere. The highlight of the festival is the sight of the shrine's mikoshi (portable shrine) being paraded from neighborhood to neighborhood by parish members wearing their respective neighborhood association happi coats. Particularly on Sunday the 27th, the whole town is enveloped in spirited chants and brimmed with vibrant energy. On Saturday the 26th, a Shinto ceremony and the Kagura dedication by the Yamamoto Shachu troupe will take place around 17:00. On Sunday the 27th, the neighborhood handover of the mikoshi begins with the shrine departure (Miyadashi) at 9:30, reaching the shrine return (Miyairi) at 18:00. This traditional festival is a perfect opportunity for local residents to gather and spend an energetic, fun-filled day.
