Oryo-san Festival
Japanese name:おりょうさんまつり
📅 Sat, Oct 10, 2026 - Sun, Oct 11, 2026
About this event
Oryo, the wife of Ryoma Sakamoto, is widely known as the woman who saved Ryoma from mortal danger during the Teradaya Incident attack. Having spent the last 33 years of her life in Yokosuka, Oryo's grave is located at Otsu Shinraku-ji Temple, where a graveside memorial service is held every autumn in her memory. This year, marking 120 years since her passing, the event will feature a memorial Buddhist service, gekkin (moon guitar) performance and storytelling, and a solo literary musical titled "Oryo-san" themed around Oryo. The graveside memorial service and gekkin performance will take place on Saturday, October 10, while the musical will be performed on Sunday, October 11. In the musical, Oryo appears as a wisteria fairy, looking back on her life from girlhood to her meeting and eventual farewell with Ryoma Sakamoto. Through a unique theatrical art form where storytelling flows into song and song into speech, this narrative exploring questions of love and life unfolds on a Noh stage filled with subtle, profound beauty.
