About this event

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Hiratsuka City Museum, the summer special exhibition "Kotsu-Kotsu: Various Bones in the Museum (Hirahaku)" will be held. This exhibition focuses on "bones" across the museum's four collection areas—biology, geology, archaeology, and folklore—introducing them from each respective perspective. Visitors can learn about the diversity of living things from skeletal specimens of modern organisms, the evolution of life and past environments from fossil bones, the history of human life from bones discovered in soil and shell mounds, and forms of faith from bones passed down from person to person. The exhibition is structured into 5 chapters: "What Are Bones?", "Skeletal Specimens of Living Organisms Today", "Bones Turned into Fossils", "Daily Life and Bones", and "Wolves and Faith". Through approximately 200 exhibits including skeletal specimens, fossils, bone/antler implements, and okashira (folklore materials), visitors can encounter various stories related to bones. As related programs, lectures and workshops for children as well as gallery talks by curators are scheduled, making it an ideal opportunity for summer independent study and learning.
