Silk Reeling Experience from Cocoons
Japanese name:まゆから糸とり体験
📅 Tue, Nov 3, 2026
About this event
In this hands-on workshop, you can learn about the use of silk thread through the process of making thread from silkworm cocoons raised at the Minkaen (folk house park) during summer. Silkworm cocoons and processed cotton will be distributed, and participants will experience reeling silk thread using the tool-free 'zuridashi' method. Using the thread made with zuridashi, you will craft a thread-wound sheep. It can be easily disassembled, so you can freely reuse the thread after taking it home. In parallel, you can also experience silk reeling tools such as 'zaguri' (seated reeling machine) and 'flyer,' as well as using a loom to weave thread into cloth. In addition, a corner to experience 'zaguri' will be set up on the same day from 10:00 to 15:00. This corner requires no reservation and is free to try. Anyone interested in silkworms or textiles is welcome to drop by! Various hands-on activities using cocoons will take place in the workshop. Let's make a thread-wound sheep with zuridashi thread.
