About this event
This is a traditional festival held throughout the Shiotani area in Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture, as the autumn annual festival of Shiogama Shrine, which was founded in the 3rd year of Joan (1173). Set in a port town scented with the sea breeze, portable shrines (mikoshi) parade all day long. The highlight is the powerful sight of men vigorously rocking the mikoshi in front of the torii gate at dusk. The Eve Festival begins on September 19 at 9:00 PM, and the Main Festival begins on September 20 at 12:00 AM midnight. During the Main Festival, the Tsuyubarai Yarekaga ceremony starts at 8:30 AM, followed by the festival ceremony starting at 9:30 AM, after which the mikoshi departs. In the evening, the Otabisho Festival takes place from 5:30 PM (17:30), the return of the mikoshi to the shrine (Miyairi) begins at 6:30 PM (18:30), and the Chinza Festival and Naorai (feast) are held at 7:30 PM (19:30).
