About this event

This is a special exhibition of Yoshu Chikanobu, a ukiyo-e artist active during the Meiji period. His real name was Naoyoshi Hashimoto. Born into a family of Takada Domain samurai retainers, he is a unique ukiyo-e artist who also experienced participating in the Boshin War. In this exhibition, approximately 150 carefully selected pieces (including both first and second terms) will be exhibited from about 1,200 newly acquired items in the Murata Collection. It approaches the life and diverse artistic world of a samurai who survived the turbulent late Edo and Meiji periods and achieved great success as a ukiyo-e artist. Through diverse works painted by Chikanobu—such as portraits of beautiful women (bijinga), modernization prints (kaikaga), historical paintings, and war prints—visitors can catch a glimpse of the social conditions and people's lives at the time. A complete turnover of exhibits will take place between the first and second terms, allowing visitors to enjoy different artworks.
