About this event
Held in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture, the 'Horinouchi Jugoya Festival' is a historic festival that has continued for over 300 years as the Autumn Grand Festival of Hachimangu Shrine. With a strong character as a harvest thanksgiving festival, it is said to have begun in Genroku 4 (1691). The festival is bustling with a variety of events, including dance floats (odori yatai), float musical performances (yatai bayashi), folk dance processions (minyo nagashi), a fireworks display, and a mikoshi (portable shrine) parade. The mikoshi parade held on the final day is especially spectacular, followed by the 'Mikoshi Nagashi' where bearers go down the Uono River along with the portable shrine, offering a view of the bearers' heroic presence. A fireworks display is also held, with 10-gou shells (shakudama) and starmines lighting up the night sky.
