Okamiokuri / Okamimukae (Send-off and Welcoming of the Deities)

Japanese name:お神送り/お神迎え

📅 Sun, Nov 1, 2026

📍 Uonuma, Niigata

About this event

Every year on November 1, local deities are said to gather at Kotai Jingu Shrine before departing for Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine. The ritual marking the departure of these deities is called "Okamiokuri". On that day, many street stalls line the area around Kotai Jingu Shrine, and traditional events such as the Grand Kagura performance are held. It is customary to welcome back the deities sent to Izumo Taisha on November 1 during the "Okamimukae" ritual on December 1. This event is based on the legend that deities from across the country gather at Izumo Taisha to hold matchmaking consultations for one month.
