Johana Mugiya Festival

Japanese name:城端むぎや祭

About this event

The autumn tradition 'Johana Mugiya Festival' will be held, turning the town of Johana, known as the Little Kyoto of Etchu, entirely into Mugiya colors. Melancholic melodies of the kokyu (traditional bowed instrument) begin to be heard from somewhere, and valiant dances unfold all over the town. Set along the atmosphere-rich streets, the 'Mugiya Dance Contest,' where neighborhood associations and folk song groups perform folk songs, is held at the ancient temple Zentoku-ji and the Johana Traditional Performing Arts Hall, drawing great cheers. Savor the atmosphere of the town, enjoy the dances and performances held in various locations, and fully indulge in the autumn tradition of Johana. It is a festival that continues to captivate many people with the contrast between the sorrowful melody of Mugiyabushi, a representative folk song of Toyama Prefecture, and the heroic, dignified Mugiya dance woven by men. Additionally, events such as the Mugiya Dance Contest, the National Mugiyabushi Contest, and the So-odori (group dance) are also held. As special plans, 'Ozashiki Mugiya Premium <Matsu no Ma>,' where you can enjoy songs and dances in the tasteful space of Zentoku-ji Temple, and 'Ozashiki Mugiya <Goten>,' where you tour the historic Goten and Ohiroshiki guided by a history guide while savoring a Japanese bento box and watching 'Mugiyabushi' songs and dances, are also available.
