Special Exhibition: "From Tateyama to Antarctica - The Beginning and Present of 70 Years of Antarctic Exploration"
Japanese name:特別展「立山から南極へ ー南極観測70年の始まりと今-」
📅 Sat, Oct 10, 2026 - Sun, Dec 13, 2026
About this event
This special exhibition looks back on the 70-year history of Antarctic exploration, conveying its origins and present state. Seventy years ago, five Tateyama guides laid the foundation for Antarctic observation as members of the 1st Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. They contributed to base construction as logistics team members, and one of them also served as a member of the wintering party. This exhibition introduces a glimpse of cutting-edge polar research alongside precious materials illustrating their achievements. Antarctica serves as a "window" to unravel the past global environment, observe the present, and forecast the future. This is a valuable opportunity to learn about the accomplishments of the pioneers who approached that window, as well as the progress of modern polar research. Through past and present glimpses of Antarctica, the exhibition offers a chance to reflect on how the future global environment may transform.
