Pioneer of Impressionism: Eugene Boudin Exhibition — Aesthetics of the Moment, Pursuit of Light

The Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art will host the exhibition "Pioneer of Impressionism: Eugene Boudin Exhibition — Aesthetics of the Moment, Pursuit of Light." Eugene Boudin (1824–98) was born in the port town of Honfleur in Normandy, France. He practiced plein air painting while interacting with Barbizon school painters and the young Claude Monet, laying the foundation for the birth of Impressionism. This exhibition showcases approximately 100 works by Boudin, including oil paintings, drawings, and pastels, presenting them not chronologically, but through eight perspectives: "Seascapes," "Sky," "Landscapes," "Architecture," "Animals," "Figures," "Drawings," and "Prints." In addition to works capturing the "moments" of scenes with sailing ships at sea, various ports, and changing aspects of nature, the exhibition also touches upon his relationships with Barbizon school painters and Monet. Through sketches recording the "moments" of nature observed outdoors, as well as studies in oil and pastel, it presents Boudin's pursuits that helped establish modern landscape painting. Held in Japan for the first time in about 30 years, this exhibition is a rare opportunity to deeply appreciate Boudin's pursuit of light and the aesthetics of the moment.
