About this event
Known as the family temple of the successive feudal lords of the Suwa Domain, Onsen-ji Temple is wrapped in vibrant autumn foliage throughout its grounds and gardens in fall. The peak viewing period is typically from late October to early November, allowing visitors to enjoy the beautiful scenery of ginkgo and maple trees turning red and yellow. Night illumination is also held during the foliage season, offering an enchanting landscape different from the daytime. The autumn leaves enveloping the garden are beautiful, and as the domain lords' family temple, it preserves the lords' mausoleum overlooking Lake Suwa, Yakushi Nyorai—the guardian Buddha of Kamisuwa Onsen—and the former sacred object of the Kamisha shrine. In autumn, the colors of fall spread across the garden and grounds, making it an ancient temple where visitors can leisurely savor history and the autumnal atmosphere.
