Japanese name:田立の花馬祭り

📅 Sun, Oct 4, 2026

📍 Nagiso, Nagano

About this event

A lively festival held in the Tadachi district of Nagiso Town, Nagano Prefecture, expressing gratitude for a bountiful harvest. Led by flutes and drums, three Kiso horses adorned with flowers made of colorful paper on their saddles march slowly from Tadachi Station to Gomiya Shrine. Once the sacred horses arrive at Gomiya Shrine and circle the grounds three times, the waiting crowd rushes toward the horses to vie for the decorative flowers. It is said that these flowers serve as insect repellents when stuck into the ridges of rice fields, or ward off evil when displayed at the entrance of a house. It was designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Nagano Prefecture in 1993, passing down its history and tradition. On the day before the festival, Tadachi Kabuki is also sometimes performed. This festival is said to have originated around the second year of Kyoho (1717), believed to have been transmitted from the Higashi-Mino region.
