Kurokawa Hakusan Shrine Annual Autumn Festival

An annual autumn festival will be held at Kurokawa's "Hakusan Ontake Shrine", designated as a tangible cultural property of Kiso Town and located in Shinkai, Kiso Town, Kiso District, Nagano Prefecture. The main highlights of this festival are the dedication of historic ancient kagura dances and fireworks. Following the Shinto ritual, traditional kagura such as the "Yumi no Mai" (Bow Dance) by children and the "Fukujin no Mai" (Dance of the Fortune God) by adults are performed, captivating visitors. Additionally, the main hall of Hakusan Shrine is a masterpiece built in the 17th year of Meiji (1884) by Tsunekichi Saito, a local master carpenter who was a central figure among the "Kiso Carpenters", incorporating techniques of the renowned Tatekawa school of Suwa throughout the temple and shrine architecture. Its overwhelming number of wood carvings are well worth taking time to appreciate in detail. It is a festival where culture and tradition thrive, letting you feel the master craftsmanship unique to the richly forested Kiso region.
