Yokai Event "Kijimadaira Night Tour"
Japanese name:妖怪イベント「鬼島平ナイトツアー」
📅 Sat, Aug 22, 2026
About this event
This is a unique event in Kijimadaira Village, Nagano Prefecture, where participants explore nighttime country roads where yokai might be lurking, relying only on the light of paper lanterns. Walking a route of about 2 km that includes unlit paths, shrines, and roads leading to cemeteries, participants look for spots that yokai would like. Incorporating yokai stories and quizzes, the tour invites participants to serve as "Yokai Relocation Spot Investigators" to certify locations that yokai would want to inhabit. This event is part of the "Kijimadaira Village Yokai Relocation Promotion Project," which aims to promote Kijimadaira Village's dark nights to yokai who find overly bright city nights difficult to live in and create a village where yokai and humans can coexist. Participating in yokai costumes or face paint is also welcome, allowing attendees to experience the charm of Kijimadaira Village in the tranquility of the night, distinctly different from the daytime. In case of stormy weather, the program will change to indoor activities at the meeting place, such as yokai quizzes and ghost stories. Rather than being a mere test of courage, this tour aims to provide an opportunity to reconsider the importance of nighttime darkness to the natural environment and pass down Kijimadaira Village's rich nature to future generations.
