About this event

An annual poetry gathering is held at Izusan Shrine on the day of the harvest moon. This event commemorates Minamoto no Sanetomo, the third shogun of the Kamakura shogunate and a renowned poet. Minamoto no Sanetomo is famous for the poem: "Hakone-ji o waga koekureba Izu no umi ya oki no kojima ni nami no yoru miyu" (Crossing over the Hakone trail, I look out at the Sea of Izu, where waves lap against the offshore islets). On the day of the event, many poets active in modern tanka poetry circles are invited, and a poetry gathering, lecture, award ceremony, and the Jugoya Festival (Fifteen-Night Festival) will take place. During the Jugoya Festival, dedication of poems and musical performances by active modern tanka poets, as well as a dedicated dance of Minamoto no Sanetomo, are scheduled. It is an event where visitors can spend a relaxing long autumn night while reflecting on Lord Sanetomo.
