About this event
Commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Sano Art Museum and the 85th anniversary of Mishima's city status, this exhibition introduces approximately 70 works focused on the themes of "travel" and "stories," centered on the Sano Art Museum collection and spanning from the medieval to modern periods. During the Edo period, road networks were developed and travel became an aspiration for people, allowing them to experience the atmosphere of travel through paintings created by artists based on what they saw and heard. Furthermore, with the development of the publishing culture, local histories and classics were printed with illustrations, making literature accessible to many people. This exhibition features folding screens depicting bustling famous places, hanging scrolls portraying literati living deep in the mountains, and ukiyo-e woodblock prints capturing the exploits of story characters, allowing visitors to enjoy the worlds within the artworks from the perspectives of the figures depicted. Notably, precious works will be displayed, including Katsushika Hokusai's "Rice Planting," Gakuo Zokyu's "Landscape" (designated as an Important Art Object), and Mitsuhide Onuma's "Customs of Mishima Post Town Folding Screen" (a Mishima City Designated Cultural Property). Related events will also be held, including a lecture on appreciating frontispiece illustrations from the Meiji and Taisho periods, as well as gallery talks by curators.
