About this event

Held to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of Sano Art Museum and the 85th anniversary of the municipal status of Mishima City, this exhibition is a precious opportunity to learn the basics of Japanese sword appreciation while comparing the sword collections held by Sano Art Museum (affectionately known as 'Sanobi') and the Tokugawa Art Museum (known as 'Tokubi'). Chapter 1, 'Understanding the Beauty of Japanese Swords - Forms', traces the influence that warfare tactics and social conditions of each era had on the shapes of swords. Chapter 2, 'Understanding the Beauty of Japanese Swords - Jigane (Steel Grain) and Hamon (Blade Pattern)', allows visitors to appreciate the artistry of forged steel surfaces and blade patterns through masterpieces, comparing characteristics of various schools including the Bizen-den tradition. Chapter 3, 'Japanese Swords and Samurai', focuses on the cultural aspects of swords that go beyond their function as weapons. In particular, famous masterpieces known as Meibutsu Sansaku by Toshiro Yoshimitsu, Goro Nyudo Masamune, and Go Yoshihiro can be viewed and compared from the collections of both museums. From first-time viewers of Japanese swords to enthusiasts, this exhibition allows visitors to thoroughly enjoy the charm of Japanese swords from various angles.
