About this event
The Peony Garden at Kasuisai features many varieties gathered from Japan and abroad, originating from seedlings brought back from China by the 48th abbot, Zen Master Mokuseki Hioki. Known as the 'flower of wealth and nobility' for its elegant appearance with layers of silky petals, the peony was introduced to Japan during the Nara period as a medicinal plant and became widely cultivated from the Edo period onward. Peonies painted by artist Reiki Yamaguchi are also depicted on the sliding door screens of the Zuiryukaku building in Kasuisai. Every year from mid-April to early May, the 3,000-tsubo (approx. 10,000 sq m) expansive garden boasts around 2,000 peony plants across 150 varieties in full bloom. In addition to rare varieties such as Okan and Tribute, visitors can enjoy Chinese/herbaceous peonies, azaleas, and German irises. During the festival period, potted plants and cut peonies are sold at the peony market, and light refreshments are available at the rest area. Furthermore, from January 1 to March 31, visitors can enjoy early-blooming peonies at the indoor peony garden held concurrently with the Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival) in the Zuiryukaku.
