About this event
The "Miya Matsuri", Gamagori's traditional festival with a history of over 300 years, is a rare festival in which a large number of male parishioners powerfully haul gigantic festival floats (yama) on a procession between Yatsurugi Shrine and Wakamiya Shrine. The highlight is the "Kaichu Togyo" (ocean crossing ritual) held on the second day of the festival, where spectators can witness the powerful sight of four floats being pulled through the sea by parishioners. The floats are structured specifically for sea crossing, with steering bars attached perpendicular to the direction of travel and wide wheels used to ensure smooth movement through the sea. At night, lanterns are lit, allowing visitors to enjoy an enchanting atmosphere.
