About this event
Boasting a tradition of more than 400 years, this is Iga's largest festival, adding color to autumn in Iga Ueno, and is designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. In November 2016 (Heisei 28), it was also inscribed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. On the day before the festival, known as "Yoiyoyama," three danjiri floats are rolled out from the Danjiri Museum, and preparations get underway in each neighborhood. The danjiri displayed in float storehouses across each town heighten the festive atmosphere. During Yoiyama, the "Ashizoroe-no-gi" ritual of the demon procession takes place along Sannomachi-suji street, and danjiri floats are pulled through Honmachi-suji and Ninomachi-suji streets. At night, lantern-lit danjiri floats are displayed in Honmachi and Ninomachi, creating a magical scene. During the main festival's "Shinkosai," the sight of the demon procession following the portable shrine procession and the nine gorgeous, magnificent danjiri floats parading through the castle town is truly breathtaking. This festival offers a valuable opportunity to experience firsthand the history and culture of Iga Ueno, continuing to captivate many people.
