About this event
This exhibition looks back through illustrations at the life, scenery, and memories of Mr. Kuniharu Naruse, who spent over a year after being evacuated as a third-grade elementary school student from Osaka to Higashi-Oshidachi Village in Echi District (now Hiramatsucho, Higashiomi City) as part of the wartime schoolchildren group evacuation. It is held as an unveiling exhibition to commemorate the donation to Higashiomi City, his evacuation destination, of 77 illustrations previously exhibited at "70 Years Since Schoolchildren Group Evacuation: Kuniharu Naruse Solo Exhibition 'Journey Through Space-Time'". Mr. Naruse spent over a year during the Pacific War living in a dormitory within the precincts of Toho-ji Temple in Hiramatsu, Higashi-Oshidachi Village, tracing his memories and pouring his emotions into his paintbrush. The exhibited illustrations depict scenes of the era such as "Marching into the Village," "Borrowed Baths," "Eating Grasshoppers," "Building Air Raid Shelters," and "The Day Osaka Disappeared," conveying the tragedy of war that must never be repeated and earnest wishes for peace to the next generation.
