About this event

Commemorating the 450th anniversary of the construction of Azuchi Castle, this special exhibition explores the magnificent castle built by the unifier Oda Nobunaga and the state of its castle town. 450 years ago, Oda Nobunaga began constructing a magnificent castle in Azuchi, Omi Province, aiming for national peace. In the castle town, he gathered the families of his vassals in the port and post town, attracted temples, shrines, and Christian facilities, and made it thrive greatly by granting tax exemptions under the Rakuichi Rakuza policy. After Nobunaga's death, the town was moved to neighboring Hachiman, but Azuchi's castle town served as a model for subsequent castle towns and was passed down to Osaka and Edo. This exhibition examines how Azuchi's castle town was created and what kind of town it was based on surviving historical documents. Major exhibits include the Important Cultural Property "Portrait of Oda Nobunaga," the "Azuchi Yamashita-cho Regulations," and the prefecture-designated Cultural Property "Azuchi Castle Construction Folding Screen." In addition, please check the official website for details as some exhibits are on display for a limited period only.
