About this event
The Okurisu Shrine Tahara Festival (Sansha Festival) is the largest autumn festival in Ujitawara Town, celebrating abundant harvests. It is said to have begun in 940 (Tengyo 3) during the mid-Heian period to celebrate Fujiwara no Hidesato's achievement in quelling the rebellion of Taira no Masakado. The festival is held every year from the Thursday to Sunday before Sports Day (the second Monday of October). On the first day, the Shinkosai (divine procession) is held, where three portable shrines (mikoshi) from Okurisu Shrine, Omiya Shrine, and Sannomiya Shrine parade to the Otabisho (temporary resting place). On the final day, the Kankosai is held, and the mikoshi return to their original shrines. An eve festival (Yoimiya) is also held the night before the Kankosai. At the Otabisho, traditional performing arts designated as Intangible Folk Cultural Properties of Kyoto Prefecture, such as 'Seino, Lion Dance, Dengaku, and King's Dance (O no Mai)', are dedicated, adding vibrancy to the festival. This festival is a precious opportunity to deeply experience the locally rooted history and traditional culture.
