About this event
In the summer of 2026, the 'Noh Children's Workshop at Ashiya Shrine' and the 'Let's Play with Japanese Culture!' children's class will be held at Ashiya Shrine in Ashiya City, Hyogo Prefecture. The 'Noh Children's Workshop' is an annual summer event celebrating its 13th edition this year, instructed by Noh performer Kozo Nagayama. Participants will try their hand at the chanting of 'Takasago' and 'Shimai' (Noh dance), aiming to perform a dance at the main sanctuary of Ashiya Shrine through a total of 8 practice sessions. In addition to Noh techniques, participants can naturally learn Japanese etiquette, such as shrine worship manners and how to handle a folding fan. Preschool children may participate only if accompanied by a sibling who is in elementary school or older. A tool usage fee of 3,000 yen for all 8 sessions is required. In 'Let's Play with Japanese Culture!', participants can watch the dressing of a Junihitoe (twelve-layered kimono) and learn about the spirit of hospitality and etiquette. Both classes offer a valuable experience to engage with traditional Japanese culture against the backdrop of Ashiya Shrine.
