About this event

At Yata ni Imasu Kushitamahikohiko Shrine, enshrined in Yamatokoriyama City, Nara Prefecture, the "Aviation Festival" is held every year on September 20. This is one of the annual festivals originating from September 20 being designated as "Aviation Day" in Showa 15 (1940). The enshrined deity of this shrine, Kushitama Nigihayahi no Mikoto, has gathered devotion as the "ancestral deity of aviation" from the ancient story of flying through the vast skies aboard the Ama no Iwafune (Heavenly Rock Boat). For this reason, aviation professionals, travelers, and others visit to pray for aviation safety and successful flights. Within the shrine grounds, an actual fighter aircraft propeller has been dedicated and hung from the ceiling rafters, symbolizing the shrine's prayers for aviation safety. This festival is a precious opportunity to experience history and myth dating back to ancient times, serving as a place of faith for many people.
