Koya Nanakuchi Nyonindo Pilgrimage Trail Tour
Japanese name:高野七口女人道めぐり
📅 Sun, Oct 18, 2026
About this event
Until the ban on women entering was lifted in 1872 (Meiji 5), women were not permitted to enter Mount Koya, which served as a monastic training ground. However, driven by various wishes such as wanting to pray to Kobo Daishi or catch even a glimpse of a son undergoing training, many women walked and created paths along the ridges of the eight peaks of Mount Koya, which became known as the Nyonin-do (Women's Pilgrimage Trail). In this event, you can walk the historic Koya Pilgrimage Nyonin-do trail while reflecting on the feelings of the women of that time. By walking the approximately 8 km course from Nakanohashi Parking Lot to the Fudozakaguchi Nyonin-do hall with a storyteller guide, you can experience the history even more deeply. Advance registration is not required, and sign-ups are accepted at the meeting point on the day. Commemorative completion gifts are also prepared, and many participants are warmly welcomed.
