About this event

The collection of the Kurashiki City Art Museum began with the works of Yoson Ikeda, a Japanese-style painter associated with Kurashiki. Using techniques acquired through Western painting training, Yoson expanded his expressive world from Western painting to Japanese-style painting (Nihonga), winning selection at the Imperial Fine Arts Academy Exhibition at a young age. 'Traces of Disaster,' born from sketches made in disaster-stricken areas of the Great Kanto Earthquake, was a confident work that focused on the dark aspects of society and empathized with its subjects, but it was not well received at the time. Later, following the example of Edo-period master Utagawa Hiroshige, he traveled the Tokaido on foot to paint 'Showa Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido,' establishing his artistic realm by incorporating traditional techniques and learning from senior painters. In his late work 'Impression of Karatsu Niji-no-Matsubara (Snipe),' the world reached by the painter unfolds across the canvas, where the birds seem to reflect Yoson's own playful spirit. This year's collection exhibition revisits the diversity of his expression and traces Yoson's artistic career. Along this journey, one can see the painter's lifestyle of evolving with a consistently open attitude. We hope both first-time visitors and familiar enthusiasts will encounter Yoson's art and discover its charm this summer.
