About this event
Held in Tonosho Town, Kagawa Prefecture, "The 39th Japan's Number One Giant Pumpkin Contest" is a unique event competing for the weight of Japan's heaviest pumpkin. Held every September, prized pumpkins gather from all over Japan. Pumpkins weighed by forklifts due to their immense weight are an impressive sight, and their size increases every year, with entries exceeding 500 kg appearing. This contest began about 40 years ago when a visitor to Shodoshima was impressed by a jumbo pumpkin contest and wondered if a similar event could be held on the island. Held ahead of the world competition for Halloween, participants bring pumpkins grown with great care, aiming to become number one in Japan while enjoying exchanges with peers and the community. At the venue, in addition to pumpkin weighing, activities such as weight-guessing games and pumpkin lantern making experiences are held to entertain visitors. This event is not merely a contest of pumpkin size, but a dream-filled event packed with community-rooted culture and people's passion.
