About this event

Said to have a history of around 700 years, the "Mizuta Tenmangu Sentomyo Fireworks Grand Festival" is a midsummer night fire festival held in Chikugo City, Fukuoka Prefecture. This festival is a traditional event to pray for bountiful harvests and family safety, using 1,000 votive lights made by pouring rapeseed oil into scallop shells with wicks to form shapes such as two-story gate towers, torii gates, sunrises, and sailing ships. At the end of the festival, there are stage events titled "Noryo Festival" and fireworks are launched to conclude this majestic and gorgeous summer festival with its roughly 700-year tradition. The "Hadakangyo", where young boys wrap white bandanas (hachimaki) and bleached cotton cloths (sarashi) around themselves and parade through the local area, is also one of the heroic highlights. It is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Fukuoka Prefecture.
