Japanese name:溝口竈門神社千灯明祭

About this event
This is a traditional festival held at Mizokuchi Kamado Shrine, which has a 1,000-year history. Held to pray for bountiful grain harvests and protection against epidemics, it was once counted as one of the Three Great Chikugo Thousand-Lantern Festivals. After male shrine parishioners perform ritual purification in the Yabe River, lights are illuminated on a scaffold approximately 15 meters high, casting the former Mizokuchi Castle keep against the dark night in a nostalgic and photogenic scene. It is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property by Chikugo City.
